Community Service
Gulliver Schools is committed to the development of global citizens through participation in school and community service. Students will learn the worth and dignity of both self and others, develop empathy for humankind, and cultivate ideas of respect and responsibility for their community. Community service is defined as the donation of one's own time, beyond school hours, for the betterment of the community and/or its people with no form of compensation or reward. Community service is usually performed with a not-for-profit business, organization, or association. Gulliver encourages students to perform service for charitable organizations. School-sanctioned community service activities may also be accepted.
Students in grades 5 & 6 are required to perform a minimum of 10 hours of community service per year. Students in grades 7 & 8 are required to perform a minimum of 15 hours per year.
Students in grades 9 - 12 are required to perform a minimum of 20 hours of community service per year. The associate headmaster must be able to confirm the number of hours donated with the sponsor of the event or program. Students are to submit a Community Service form, available from the associate headmaster or in the Student Activities Office, or a letter on official stationary from the organization where service was performed. Information on this form must include the name of the service performed, appropriate signatures, and the telephone number of the sponsor of the event; incomplete forms will not be accepted. Failure to complete the minimum 20 hours of community service per year may result in the withholding of a graduation diploma and transcript for a senior and of final grades for an underclassman.
